Well, my answer is no…Read on to know why..

Are you planning to quit Social Media anytime in the near future? If yes, then you have come to the right place. Read on to know why you should not. If no, still do read what I have to say here, some additional reasons to stay on and leverage the power of Social Media is worth it, isn’t it?

Lets get to the point and explore some benefits which Social Media has to offer.

Platform for small scale Businesses

Apps like Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and so on have now become a great platform for small and growing businesses to communicate directly and effectively with their customer base. For instance, all the apps allow accounts to be created and pictures of the products sold(along with a detailed description including the price) to be posted for people to see. This way, quality supplies from small businesses are brought to limelight.

Platform for fundraisers

We see a lot of fundraisers on Social media now a days. Supporting a noble cause and lending a helping hand has been made easy for one and all through these applications. With the click of a few buttons, many are able to reach out to those in need of financial assistance and help them. This also leads us to another topic of volunteering for social causes, which gets showcased on Social Media, thereby motivating many to do the same.

Yes of course, comparing our lives with others is the key element here, but why not that be for the benefit of others too? What do we gain here? Satisfaction of having done something good and the world knows we did! Its out there, we did post it on our social media accounts dint we?

Covid-19 and Social media

Let us not always look at the fear factor. There is always a positive side to everything. Social media came to the rescue of lakhs of people who were stranded across the world when flights were cancelled as part of precautionary measures by many countries. People were able to safely reach their home countries by staying connected and receiving valuable information about special flights and arrangements by the Governments of their respective countries to bring their citizens back home. That’s some good work, don’t you think?

Social Media and Job market

Apps like LinkedIn have become the go to platform for job seekers and professionals alike to showcase their career achievements and milestones. So, there is no harm in saying that it does help people across the globe to find a job(we do see a lot of posts with respect to job loss due to covid crisis and we also get to see an amazing number of people trying to help those who are in need!)

Is Social Media eating away your time?

Come to think of it, who doesn’t like to be “liked”? So, what if we end up spending some time to post stories, messages and what not to our timelines? But hey, I just wanted to post a song that I am listening to, but ended up spending a good one hour browsing around. Does this resonate with you? If not always, but many a times it does.

Instead of concluding that Social Media is eating away our time, we could follow some simple rules to make effective use of these incredibly powerful tools available to us.

1.When you realize you are into mindless browsing, stop then and there. This is the first and foremost rule which will save a lot of our time. There are a lot of other things to do, rather than browse aimlessly. I would refrain from mentioning what the other things might be, because its an individual’s wish.

2. Refrain from using Social media while with kids or the elderly. These are the two age groups that need the best of our attention. Why not give them some of our time? After spending quality time(even if it is 15 minutes or so) we can always excuse ourselves to do our liking. They would feel happy that they got our undivided attention.

3. Try not to compromise on your sleeping hours. As we are all aware, the time just before sleep is when we are most relaxed. We do want some distractions to keep our minds away from the daily activities and unwind ourselves. We pick our mobile phones and headphones to sit and watch short videos or movie clips and so on along with some catching up over chat platforms with friends. While all this is much needed at the end of the day, it would be ideal to fix a time and not to exceed it so that we get some quality sleep. Sleep gives rest not only to the body but to the mind as well. Hence, it is best to spend few minutes with just ourselves before sleep. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Folks, its your call now, to quit or not to quit. The points above did help make a decision I presume. Thanks for reading.
